Description: Yamaha Corporation is an international corporation with a broad range of products and services, mainly musical instruments and electronics. It was formed in 1887 by Torakusu Yamaha. It started as a reed organ and piano manufacturer. Torakusu Yamaha named it the Nippon Gakki Company, Ltd. The company’s manufacturing facilities were diverted in World War II by then President Genichi Kawakamisaki. At the time, the company was known for its expertise in working with metal alloys. This gave birth to the manufacture of motorcycles.

In the year 1958, 125 units of the YA-1 bikes were produced. The bike was modeled after the DKW RT125 vehicles from Germany. The YA-1 had a single cylinder engine and 125cc gas tank. The Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. started in 1959.

Yamaha started making archery equipment in 1959. Five Olympic Gold medalists used its products. However, this division was closed in 2002.

The name of the company was officially changed to The Yamaha Corporation in October 1987. The first CD recorder was distributed by the company in 1979. The corporation expanded its electronics assets by buying a number of companies. It bought Sequential Circuits in 1988. It also owned the majority share (51%) of the company Korg from 1989 to 1993.

Yamaha has also a wholly owned subsidiary called Yamaha Music U.K. Ltd. The name was changed from Yamaha-Kemble Music (UK) Ltd. later of 2007. It bought out the Kemble family’s shares in July 2007. The company imports and sells musical instruments and professional audio equipment.

January 28, 2008 when Yamaha announced in that the company would takeover the ownership of Bösendorfer. An agreement was made with the Austrian Bank BAWAG P.S.K. Group on Dec. 20, 2007. Bösendorfer is a piano maker that is based in Austria. It is now a Yamaha Corp. subsidiary.

Several companies are parts of the Yamaha as subsidiaries or acquired assets. These companies include Yamaha Pro Audio, Yamaha Motor Company, Yamaha Livingtec Corporation, Yamaha Metanix Corporation, Bösendorfer Klavierfabrike GmbH, Austria, Vienna and Yamaha Fine Technologies Co. Limited.

The company currently distributes a number of music instruments. This includes vibraphones, pianos, “silent” pianos, guitars, drums, violins, woodwinds, celli and violas. Yamaha also makes semiconductor chips, sporting goods, specialty metals, home appliances, computer related accessories, industrial robots and audio/visual equipment.

The company also runs the Yamaha Music School. There are 700,000 students enrolled in branches found in over 40 countries and locations. This music program began in the 1980s.
